TONIC at SKYLON May - August 2011
by Joby Williamson & Craig Wheatley
As part of Southbank Centre’s summer-long celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain (1951), Skylon has invited artists Craig Wheatley and Joby Williamson to create a series of works for the restaurant, grill and bar. ‘TONIC’ draws on some of the major themes and motifs of the original festival, evoking its ‘village fete’ optimism and retro-romanticism with a bunting motif in various media: as porcelain reliefs, a ‘hand drawn’ neon swag, large photographic prints and as graphics around the columns that punctuate the space.
